Makers Monday Feature: Deb Ash
Share with the creative community who you are.
I am Deb Ash, I have been formed by the wide open spaces of the prairies, and the delight of discovery that life holds for wide open prairie-like hearts. I deeply appreciate symbology and art, music and nature.
What do you create? What materials do you use to create?
At the moment I create paintings, prayer flags, and rock art, and am trying my hand at encaustic, to name a few. However, my medium of choice changes as I develop new interests. I do use a variety of mediums to create - ink, paint, fabric, wax, rocks and wood.

Why do you create?
I create as a means of expression, meditation, and fun. I create because I must. My practice has become much more fluid and intuitive over time. I am much more focused on the process of creation than I am the product or the end result.
How much time do you spend on your art practice? Is it enough?
I have a studio in my home, my Ash Atelier, which I use regularly - sometimes daily, sometimes weekly, depending on what demands are on my time to be spent elsewhere. When reduced to a weekly engagement it leaves me restless and pinning to submerse myself in what I call my happy place. Sometimes if time constraints are high and creative time low, I will simply sit in my Atelier with some lovely music and pray, or read, and soak in all the goodness that place represents for me.

What is the most rewarding part of creating?
For me the product is simply a memento of the experience of engaging the creative process. When what I have created turns out lovely, it is a bonus.
What does creative joy mean to you?
I also love sharing my Atelier with friends, and especially my grandchildren, as a place to invite them to engage the creative process that I have found to be life-giving and full of abundant joy.
