Makers Monday: Sheri Wollf of Earth Sisters

Hello Creative Community! I am Sheri Wollf of Earth Sisters – upcycler extraordinaire. I love being able to reuse materials so much that even my home is upcyled. I live in a renovated 1929 Bergthaler church with my musical husband, my magician son and two rescue dogs. Our home is filled with messy creativity and artistic expressions from various disciplines.

What do you create? What materials do you use to create?
I create a various wall art and wearable jewelry. My favorite items to create are those that reuse materials in new and exciting ways. My broken dishes necklaces have become incredibly popular! I have been honored to create timeless keepsakes for many families by reincarnating their loved ones special china into wearable pendants. This has been such a special journey for me – as many of my clients tell me after receiving their orders, they now feel like they can `wear a part of their loved one close to their hearts`.

I also spend a lot of time recreating doilies into boho themed dreamers! These pieces were inspired by my Grandmothers crochet skills. I was saddened that no one seemed to appreciate the skills of the women before us (as I kept finding their beautiful works of art in garage sales and thrift store bins). I wanted to pay homage to the art of those women and make people love grandma’s doilies again!

Why do you create?
I create because its lights a fire in me that I never knew existed. It is who I believe I am truly meant to be. It allows me to express and connect with the world in ways I never thought possible.

How has your art practice evolved since you first started?
My art has always been with me – but I struggled for many years with the term `artist` - I struggled with painting, sculpture, performance art – and then when I finally allowed myself to toe the `crafting` line – everything shifted – I no longer felt like I needed to conform to what I had previously thought `artist` meant. It was freeing and I was on fire! Since then, with three years of very hard work, I am now able to make my living from doing what I love!!

How much time do you spend on your art practice? Is it enough?
I currently spend forty+ hours per week on my art practise. Some weeks this is enough – some weeks its not!

Do you have a philosophy?
My philosophy is – everyone has something that lights them up inside – go with that – whatever it may be – and do it!

What does creative joy mean to you?
Creative joy to me, means that I’ve lit that fire & shared it with the world! When I am exhausted, my hands are raw and bleeding and it`s late, but that order is complete – and I know how special the memories are for the family that is going to receive those broken dishes pendants – that’s creative joy.
