HISTORY - My Saskatchewan roots in the visual arts run deep. As a young child growing up in Bethune, Saskatchewan, I was immersed in my family's devotion to the arts. My family created. They painted, sketched and sculpted, and I saw their art displayed everywhere. Witnessing adults always creating and appreciating the arts, I quickly developed a desire to create beautiful things that could be enjoyed. Always encouraged to draw and paint, this natural love grew into a full-time habit by the time I reached high school in Lumsden, Saskatchewan. There, I enrolled in every available art class and instead of home economics, I signed up for the Industrial arts program offering an intro to photography. With the support of my excellent art teacher Mr Terry Osbourne, my first public art installation consisted of murals in the high school's Fine Art room and the English classroom.
SCHOOL - The University of Calgary BFA program was next on the agenda, but my attempts to convince my parents that an art career was really a sound financial idea weren't as successful as I might have hoped. As a compromise, I opted instead for two years at Medicine Hat College to explore graphic arts. I had little idea what "graphic arts" might entail, only assuming that it would fill my need for immersion in the arts. On a break from Medicine Hat and having returned to Bethune, I wasn't sure I wanted to return to Alberta to continue in the Fine Arts Program. I happened upon my brother's copy of a SIAST course calendar and with no second-guessing, made the decision to enroll. I graduated from SIAST's Applied Photography Program in 1997.
MARRIAGE AND KIDS - Marriage in 1997 and the birth of our three daughters in the decade following graduation from SIAST's Applied Photography program slowed the art production but failed to extinguish the need to create. I can laugh now about the difficulty of juggling camera bags and diaper bags and the fact that at times, the two didn't mix well for me.
PHOTOGRAPHY CAREER - My investment in my art reduced to "time bites," I volunteered at Cypress Hills photography workshops throughout the early 2000s. In 2007, having joined the Regina Photo Club, I bought a Canon Powershot G9 and started shooting again. In 2009, I purchased my first digital SLR - a Canon 40D, replaced more recently with another Canon full sensor camera and then slowly added gear as I could afford to. Working as a commercial photography assistant with my friend and mentor, Greg Huszar, brought me back into my creative career full time. A 2010 Neil Balkwell experimental acrylics course enabled me to rediscover my love of paint. Through this return to the craft emerged the seeds of my own modernist style. Two years later, from a field of 28,000 photographers each vying for the one Grand Prize in Scott Kelby's Worldwide Photo Walk, my infrared photo (featured below The Trio UV) won one a place in the Top 10.
ART CAREER - My varied experience within the arts: I create artworks for fine art clients. I still do photography. It includes the photography that I include in collage work, pet and portraits and commercial photography shoots for my business clients. (Creative Kids, Farm Credit Canada, Chartered Professional Accountants and more.) I have been involved with many art associations in the past years including Regina Photo Club, Brushworks Art Guild, Regina Art Collective (RAC), and a Board Member for the Art Gallery of Regina in (2017 & 2018), CARFAC member and a juried member of the Saskatchewan Craft Council. My encaustic paintings, acrylic paintings, collage and photographic prints are held in private collections throughout Britain, Australia, the United States and Canada.
PRESENTLY - I currently own and operate my businesses Kristin MacPherson Studio ( my personal studio photography and personal art works) and Red Fox Creative Studio ( my workshops and creativity lessons). I run workshops out of my personal encaustic art studio located at 1005 Wellings Road (the Complete Wheel Shop owned by my husband and I). Also, I teach at various locations around the province. I travel to bring the joy of creativity to others. I really enjoy teaching, and I love to share the joy I get from creativity with others.
And that is me in a nutshell...
